Acting Class

Calling all class clowns and drama queens! Acting class is for you – whether you’re the king of comedy, or if you’ve got a more dramatic flair. Want to build your confidence in public speaking? Learn how to think on your feet, use your imagination, and think creatively? This class is for you, too. We’ll explore acting techniques for screen and stage, using drama games, improvisation, and acting exercises to prepare for working with scripted material. We work on monologues, scene study, and group scenes from a variety of sources – everything from classical monologues to current film scenes – Shakespeare, sitcoms and everything in between.

You’ll learn the basics of camera work as well. Got an audition coming up? Bring in your sides and we’ll work on it in class! The S.P.A.C.E. also has a library of plays, film and television scripts, audition sides and more available to all acting students. Plus, if you’ve ever been curious about what goes on behind the scenes, or wanted to create your own stuff – here’s your chance. You’ll have the opportunity to do everything from writing a script, to set design, costume design, making props, stage managing, casting, editing…you can even try your hand at directing. Students will each be given a part that highlights their strengths for performances in class, as well as for our Christmas show at the end of Term I, and our final year end show in June. Taught by Linette Doherty.

Who can register?

For the serious actor with aspirations of performing, or for the kid who is looking for a fun way to develop some confidence. Our Junior Acting class is for kids aged 9 – 11. Senior Acting is for students 12 years of age or older. Since much of the work to memorize lines must be done at home, students should have the ability and the desire to practice on their own (please inform teachers about any difficulties with reading). We also have Musical Theatre classes to further the development of your skills.

What do I wear?

Actors need to be able to move freely, so dress comfortably – a leotard or close fitting T–shirt with a pair of sweat pants is ideal. Jeans restrict movement, and oversized clothing makes it difficult to see the body – these should not be worn in class unless they are part of a specific costume.

You will also need a pair of indoor–use shoes to wear in the studio. Long hair should be tied back off the face, and jewellery removed. You’ll be given a folder to keep scripts in; please bring it with you to each class. If you lose it, you are responsible for replacing it.

Scripts cannot be handed out to students without suitable folders.

1. Our season runs from September to June, and is divided into two terms; students registered for the full season have priority over new students for placement in Term II.

4. A non-refundable registration fee of $30 is required to reserve placement. All fees (including post dated cheques) must be received with registration. Additional payment plans are subject to an administrative fee of $15. A $35 charge will be added to any NSF cheque, and a late charge of $10 per month will be added to unpaid balances. Receipts are issued at the beginning of each term; there is a $15 administrative fee should you require an additional copy.
5. Full refunds of unused class fees will be issued up until the 3rd class of the term. There will be no refunds after the 4th class, or for classes missed due to lateness, absence, or being unable to participate in class for any reason.
6. Our staff is made up of working industry professionals. We may schedule make up classes or substitute teachers if staff members are absent due to professional obligations.
