Jazz / Hip Hop Class

Our most popular class! This high energy class combines a mix of classic jazz technique with cool street moves. Jazz and Hip Hop are wide ranging dance forms that cover many different styles, including what you see in videos on MuchMusic or BET, lyrical, classic Broadway musicals, and the latest moves from the clubs and the streets. And it’s all set to the hottest sounds of today’s music.

Beginner classes introduce students to the fundamentals of jazz technique, and the emphasis is on FUN! We start with simple warm ups and stretches, and introduce technique along with choreography. Students then progress through the Junior levels, where they master basic technique before moving on to

Elementary and Intermediate classes, which are for those who have completed Junior III, or who are beginning dance classes as teenagers (twice weekly classes strongly recommended). Older students interested simply in a recreational class may also register. Elementary/Intermediate classes review Junior level work and expand on it, introducing more complex sequences of movement to prepare for the more advanced technique of Senior level classes. Senior students must have completed the Intermediate exam – new students with sufficient jazz training will be assessed in class.

Due to the more difficult demands of this level, Senior students must take class twice a week. The S.P.A.C.E. uses the Stelio Jazz Technique syllabus. Jazz Examinations are offered starting at the Junior level, and all students are encouraged to participate (exam fees extra).

Who can register?

Beginner Jazz/Hip Hop is for students aged 6 – 8, Junior classes are for 9 – 11 year olds, Elementary/Intermediate classes are for those 12 and up, and Senior classes are for students 14 years of age and older who have completed their Intermediate exam. Ballet classes are recommended to improve technique, strength, and flexibility, and Musical Theatre classes are also offered for those interested in musical theatre performance.

Gum, food, and drinks are not permitted in the studio, but students are encouraged to bring a water bottle – you’ll sweat!
